Linux PServer on Windows 2000/XP ??
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/sfu/default.asp
this is something (free) from microsoft that claims to allow you to run UNIX and Linux services on Windows.
any tech-savvy person care to test the Linux PServer on this? :]

I downloaded all 222mb of that. then I unzipped it to another 200+ mb, and ran the installer.
half way through it mentions, oh yeah you need NTFS. so screw that... I cannot test it.
I'm assuming it WOULD work however since it says its posix compliant. however, someone informed me they are in the process of porting the Linux PServer to Windows, and have a working copy.
they'd release it now but, they need to work out the bugs first (such as `kill not working at all). I'll keep everyone updated on that! and if anyone can get the windows unix app thing working let me know please.

total waste of time. tried it on NTFS
oh, thank you wonderful documentation department of microsoft for failing to mention that services for UNIX is nothing more than a crappy compatibility layer, and you actually need to compile against it and run the windows version of the recompiled UNIX app!
I guess microsoft couldnt buy cygwin, so they had to make this pile of horse crap. complete waste of time AND space (almost 3 gigs used up in all of the unzipping/temp directories for installing) ... and cygwin is like 200k...opensource, and works better.
geez.
anyway. like I said, I'll test this "port" that some people I know have started, and report back with any findings!

Interesting concept, Andrew. There is another alternative which is LINE (LINE is Not an Emulator), the project can be found at
http://line.sourceforge.net.
Although this project hasn't been active for awhile (still alpha), it is classified as usable. It uses Cygwin-1.1.8 to compile and the corresponding cygwin.dll to execute. I haven't look at it for quite awhile now, but if I have time I might try if I could get it to work with Linux Pserver.

Ok, here's the deal without going into the technical details:
- LINE (Line is Not an Emulator) does not work.
- UMLWIN32 (User Mode Linux for Win32) does not work.
Besides, there were no development for any of the projects for quite a while now.
However, there is a project which was announced a few months back that looks very promising -- coLinux (cooperative Linux) running Linux under Windows. This project is actively being developed. I'm giving coLinux a go to see if the Linux PServer would run under it.

Well, I'll be darn. It actually works -- running Linux PServer under coLinux on Windows XP. If there are any interest, I'll write a short note how it is done.

Oh definately, I think if we can get the 4.5 Linux server to work on Windows (2000 in my case) I would be very happy. Never saw the point of using a private Palace server without plugins before.

CoLinux will NOT run under Windows 95/98/ME, but WILL run under Windows 2000/XP/2003. So you're in luck, you can run coLinux =)
However, the setting up -- especially the networking part -- could be a challenge. It depends on the setup of your internal network. If you have only one PC connected via a modem, it's one setup. Then if you have one PC connected via DSL, that's another setup. If your PC have an Internet Connection Sharing, then that's yet another. If you have, like me, an intranet, that's yet another. And so on...
If you could describe your setup, then perhaps, I could write with a setup like that in mind. I'd like to make the setting up be as simple as possible, and writeup accordingly.
