The wake diary

On Sept 30th through Oct 1st the Reginald Code wake was held at Digital Exposure. This six and a half hour event wasn't just the end of the Reg Code generator, its was a celebration of the palace and the community which made it great. Before the event even started it was becoming clear this wasn't just a silly party, people from allover the world came popping in, either on icq or on the palace, asking what they could do to help. Being in another part of the world, the timezone difference can be a big pain especially when the pressure is on at work.

At the end of the week a day before it all had to happen there was only a bunch of ideas and a little scenario of what "should" happen. Completely wasted from a 12 hour day video shoot with a 5 hour drive home I went online, told Khar2oon what was suppose to happen, gave the "keys to the castle" and went to sleep. The next morning the first thing I did was go online to see what has happened. It was amazing, Khar had gotten Red, Foxy, Speck and Fink together and they had gone to work. (all great PDG people I might add)

The had taken the Monty Python Holy Grail scene and put it into a skit that not only was one of the funniest, but stated what many people are feeling right now. Khar was still up and in the afternoon Red popped in what was left to be done. After explaining to him about the little prelude he went to do his magic. The big thing still missing was the wake room picture. Speck had already made a very funny picture for the wake room (a TV evangelist room send up) but being thickheaded I decided to make another, more "digital exposure",  one.

It must be said, nothing beats the surprise of getting a nice zip file in the morning with a room picture and a bunch of carefully selected midi's and wav's. Speck even made both a  JPEG and GIF of the room pic. Feeling a bit guilty I went to work on the room picture anyway, hoping it actually would turn good enough to use. Just when all the graphics where ready, as by magic Foxy appeared to do the final scripting touch ups. As usual, things did not run as smoothly as expected. The door with the script Foxy had been working on decided it was time to be obsolete and vanished. (even thought we didn't "feel" it was obsolete)

After diving into the server files and retrieving the door from the Palace.Pat file there was more scripting magic needed to make sure we would not horribly crash during the event. Fink had prepare a bot for the ceremony and was programming it with more witty things to say while the people where coming in for the event. We where now about 45 minutes into the event, even though the plan was to open the doors to the wake an hour after we officially started, we where running out of time. To make sure people didn't get bored and leave Khar2oon and I where playing Granny Source and Uncle Lag to entertain. Falkon and Tybalt jumped in and saved the day by doing a great job with the crowd control as well. Things where heating up and we where ready to roll. Red put the final touches on the Burial room and of we went, the Reginald Code Wake was now officially open!

During the Wake ceremony Foxy helped out by re doing the end sermon which I more or less messed up by not knowing you should wear a * to have people hear the midi's. While he was busy re-doing the end sermon the right way a last check of the burial room was needed. The room was called Reginal's Burial and was nowhere to be found in the roomlist. What happened? Perhaps an error in the client? How can this be? There was a backup of the Palace.pat file so the room could be recovered if really needed, but that would everybody has to log of, restart the server and come back. I guess now it really was time to panic in some way, but a quick re check down the last rooms on the list revealed the fact there where 2 new rooms both with the same ID.And one of them was what used to be the Reginalds Burial room.

For some reason, when there was a newroom created to house the bot, it had caused an error and the Burial room had turned into a new room. It had the clouds picture and everything, a quick check showed that the doors where still there, so where the spot pictures but the room background and room name where just set to something completely different. A bit scared to do anything at all the room was moved to the top of the list, renamed and opened for the crowd. At first Granny Source tried to run the skit but the client caused a strange error and once again Foxy had to carry the show, which ran perfectly. For the next 5 hours a group of people stayed, Tybalt handed out his funny "maartschroom" dancing mushroom prop and we fooled around until the next group of people showed up to see the Wake and enjoy the Burial skit. Around 6 am I bailed out and went to sleep, only to get up the next day to catch more fun people on the palace who came to check out the Wake, and getting a Barbara original prop to boot!

All in all I can say I'm very proud of being part of this event, and think its really impressive the way everybody just got "into" it, they just asked "what do you want me to do" and did it. Not only that, they did it better, funnier and more creative then I could have imagined. So once again my thanks go to the people who really made it happen: Khar2oon for being there 3 days in a row working on how we could and should do this, Foxy for his funny and insightful look on Reginalds passing and saving the show twice, Red for making the whole burial room work, Pat for coming in and giving us just the av.'s we needed to make the role playing so much fun, Speck for making the room picture, Fink for making such a funny Bot which still makes me laugh when I read the log, Falkon and Tybalt for being there to take care of the "crowd", PDG for being such a great group of people, I'm sure without the PDG life on the palace would have looked very bleak indeed.

And offcourse a very big thank you to everybody who showed up, on the day itself and during the week to come, and see all our hard work. Without you this would have been just a picture show, you made this event what is really is: a beautiful and fabulous happening! (far out man)
